MY CHALLENGE
What are your all time favourites scenes from children's
books?
Not favourite books themselves, but those key moments
that really stand out in your imagination, be it because
of its importance in a story, the quality of characterisation,
the brilliant writing, or how it moved and impressed
you.
For me it's either Frodo's first real encounter with
the Nazgul in the Lord of the Rings and then the race
to Rivendale, or a chapter in The Wind in the Willows
called Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It's apparently kids'
least favourite chapter and it does stand out strikingly
from the rest. But when the animals are blinded by the
vision of the great God Pan, then made to forget lest
they loose themselves, for me it's one of the most evocative
in all literature - for it's beauty, it’s strange
mystic link with ancient myths and its deep tenderness.
You can feel the author’s soul. I aspire to that
kind of writing in my own books.
